Free Ordinations

Thursday February 16, 2006
Are you looking for more information on how to get ordained for free? It may sound strange, but quite a few atheists become ordained ministers. Some do it as a joke. Some do it as a way of showing that, just because a person is a minister, that doesn't automatically mean that their statements about religion should be given extra weight. Many more, however, become ordained so that they can do things like officiate at wedding ceremonies.

There are several places where can be ordained for free — the most popular seems to be the Universal Life Church. When you hear about an atheist being ordained, it's usually through the ULC. Another place that probably deserves serious consideration is Spiritual Humanism. They are even less religious (in a traditional sense) than the ULC:

As Spiritual Humanists we believe that every person has innate right to make a spiritual connection to the rest of the cosmos. Our premise is simple: We can solve the problems of society using a religion based on reason.

Most organizations that give our free ordinations also do other things that the charge for. You can buy "Minister Packages" that provide an ID card, books for performing weddings, clergy plaques to put in your car, and so on. There are also opportunities (for a fee) to get degrees or special titles.

Here are some other places where you can be ordained for free:
